7 Miracles In The Bible By Jesus

Jesus performed many miracles during his ministry on earth, demonstrating his divine power and authority over nature, spirits, disease, and death. These miracles served to fulfill Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah, authenticate Jesus’ claims to be the Son of God, and instill faith in those who witnessed them. In this comprehensive blog post, we will examine some of the major miracles performed by Jesus that are recorded in the Bible.

Introduction

The Bible records over 40 direct miracles performed by Jesus during his earthly ministry. These supernatural acts characterized Jesus’ public life and ministry as he traveled throughout Galilee and Judea teaching, preaching, and healing the sick. The Gospel writers meticulously documented these miracles as evidence that Jesus was truly the promised Messiah.

Here are some key takeaways about the miracles of Jesus:

  • They demonstrated Jesus’ divine nature and power as the Son of God.
  • They fulfilled Messianic prophecies about the coming Savior.
  • They authenticated Jesus’ authority to forgive sins.
  • They elicited praise, worship, and faith among those who witnessed them.
  • They were also done out of compassion to relieve human suffering.

In this blog post, we will focus on some of the most significant miracles performed by Jesus that are highlighted in the Gospels. While certainly not an exhaustive list, these miracles provide a representative sample of the supernatural signs and wonders that accompanied Jesus’ ministry.

7 miracles in the bible by jesus

Turning Water into Wine (John 2:1-11)

The very first miracle described in the Gospel of John is Jesus turning water into wine at a wedding feast in Cana. When the wine had run out, Jesus’ mother Mary informed him of the situation. Jesus responded by directing the servants to fill six stone water pots with water. After they had done so, Jesus instructed them to draw some out and take it to the master of the feast. When the master tasted this liquid, he remarked that it was the finest wine of the feast, even though it had come only from water.

This miracle signifies Jesus’ power over creation and matter itself. By simply commanding it, Jesus transformed a substance from one state to another, bypassing the normal time required for fermentation. This miracle reveals Christ’s glory and leads his disciples to put their faith in him (John 2:11). It also sets the stage for his public ministry as he begins to reveal himself as the promised Messiah.

He manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him (John 2:11 NKJV).

Healing an Official’s Son (John 4:43-54)

While in Cana, Jesus was approached by a royal official whose son was sick and close to death in Capernaum. The official pleaded with Jesus to come and heal his son. Rather than travel to Capernaum, Jesus simply told the man, “Go your way; your son lives.” The man took Jesus at his word and departed. While he was still on his way home, his servants met him and informed him his son had recovered. After inquiring about the timing, the official realized his son had been healed at the exact moment Jesus had pronounced him well.

This miracle demonstrates Christ’s authority over sickness and his ability to heal from a distance. Jesus did not need to be physically present to work this wonder – he simply pronounced the boy healed through his divine authority. This increased the official’s faith, and led his whole household to believe in Christ.

And the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and his whole household (John 4:53 NKJV).

Healing a Lame Man at Bethesda (John 5:1-15)

In John 5, Jesus went to Jerusalem where there was a pool called Bethesda. Surrounding this pool lay a multitude of disabled people awaiting an angel to stir the waters, after which the first person to enter would supposedly be healed. Jesus approached a man who had been lame for 38 years. The man explained he had no one to help him into the pool when the waters stirred, so others always entered first. Jesus responded by commanding the man to “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” Immediately the man was healed, got up, and walked for the first time in decades.

This miracle shows Christ’s authority to instantly and completely heal those afflicted with disabilities. His power overrides illnesses and conditions considered hopeless by human standards. The man’s response was to glorify God and tell the Jewish leaders that Jesus had made him well.

Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked (John 5:8-9 NKJV).

Feeding the Five Thousand (John 6:1-14)

One of Jesus’ most famous miracles was feeding a crowd of 5,000 men plus women and children using only five barley loaves and two small fish. As evening approached, the disciples wanted to send the large crowd away to find food. But Jesus instructed them to have the people sit down on the grass. He then proceeded to bless the few loaves and fish in his possession, which multiplied to sufficient quantities to feed the entire multitude, with leftovers still remaining!

This amazing miracle reveals Jesus’ supernatural creative power to defy the laws of nature and physics. He miraculously produced physical food out of nothing in order to compassionately satisfy the hunger of thousands of people who had gathered to hear him preach. The people rightly interpreted this sign as evidence that Jesus must be “the Prophet who is come into the world” (John 6:14).

So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten (John 6:13 NKJV).

Jesus Walks on Water (John 6:16-21)

After feeding the five thousand, Jesus sent his disciples to cross the Sea of Galilee in a boat while he went to pray alone. As the disciples were making their journey, a fierce storm arose and tossing their boat violently. Early in the morning, the disciples saw Jesus walking on the surface of the water towards their boat. Initially frightened, they were reassured when Jesus identified himself and calmed the storm. As soon as Jesus entered the boat, they reached the shore.

The miracle of Jesus walking on water highlights his authority over nature and physics. The laws of gravity and buoyancy did not apply to Jesus as the very Son of God. By taming the storm, Jesus again revealed his divine power and inspired awe in his disciples. This miracle is tied directly to the previous feeding of the five thousand as evidence of Jesus’ supernatural identity.

But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed it was a ghost, and cried out; for they all saw Him and were troubled. But immediately He talked with them and said to them, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid” (John 6:49-50 NKJV).

Healing a Man Born Blind (John 9:1-41)

As Jesus was passing by, his disciples took note of a man who was blind from birth and asked Jesus about the cause of his condition. Jesus explained the man’s blindness was not due to any specific sin, but rather so “the works of God should be revealed in him.” Jesus then spat on the ground, made clay with the saliva, and rubbed it on the blind man’s eyes. After washing in the Pool of Siloam, the man was able to see for the first time in his life.

This amazing miracle shows Jesus’ supernatural power to override congenital disabilities with a simple action. As the Creator, Jesus could restore sight where it had been missing since birth. This caused confusion for the Pharisees who were universalistic critics of Jesus. After questioning the man thoroughly, they still refused to accept his testimony about Jesus. But the former blind man remained steadfast in his witness about Christ’s identity and the miracle he had experienced.

He answered and said, “Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see” (John 9:25 NKJV).

Raising Lazarus from the Dead (John 11:1-44)

Perhaps the climactic miracle recorded in John’s gospel is Jesus raising his friend Lazarus from the dead. When Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha, became ill, they sent word to Jesus urgently requesting his help. Rather than travel immediately to Bethany, Jesus delayed two days before departing with his disciples. When Jesus finally arrived, Lazarus had been dead and buried for four days. Grieving, Martha went out to meet Jesus saying if he had arrived sooner, Lazarus would not have died. Jesus assured her Lazarus would rise again. At the tomb, Jesus commanded that the stone be rolled away. He prayed aloud to the Father, then shouted, “Lazarus, come forth!” At Jesus’ command, Lazarus walked out of the tomb still wrapped in his grave clothes, miraculously raised back to life.

This incredible miracle is the climactic sign in John’s gospel confirming Jesus’ identity as the Resurrection and the Life. As God incarnate, Jesus has ultimate power over life and death itself, able to call a deceased person from the grave with just his verbal command. This miracle produced faith in many witnesses, but also intensified the opposition of the chief priests and Pharisees who now sought to kill Jesus.

And when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes… (John 11:43-44 NKJV).

Conclusion

The miracles performed by Jesus during his earthly ministry revealed his true nature and identity as the very Son of God, the promised Messiah. His miraculous signs demonstrated power over nature, disease, demons, death, and even proved his authority to forgive sins. These miracles fulfilled Old Testament prophecies about the coming Messiah, produced faith and worship among eyewitnesses, and confounded Jesus’ critics. Though not an exhaustive survey, this blog post has summarized some of the major miracles done by Jesus recorded in the Gospel of John. These supernatural feats authenticated Jesus’ claims and led many to receive him as Lord and Savior. The miracles of Jesus present undeniable evidence that he is exactly who he claimed to be – the Christ, the Son of God, and the Savior of the world.
