The Power Of The Resurrection - 6 Present Day Benefits

Last week I celebrated my 36th Easter season. That in and of itself is a tribute to the power of the resurrection of Jesus.

Easter is one of my favorite times of the entire year. The reason I love Easter is multifaceted.

Part of it is nostalgia from the good times I experienced at Easter as a kid.

Part of it is in remembrance of all that Christ has and will do.

Mainly though, it is because of what the power of the resurrection of Christ does 365 days a year in my life.

Many Christians look at Easter from either a historical perspective of what Christ did or from a prophetic perspective looking at what Christ will do.

Most do not look at what Christ is doing in the present.

Before we get into the present day realities of the resurrection of Christ, let’s take a moment to look at how we limit our understanding of the resurrection by having a past or future tense perspective of the resurrection of Jesus.

Limiting Perspectives of the Resurrection

When You Only Look To The Past Resurrection

Is it wrong to look to the historical resurrection?

Of course not!

When we do we learn that Jesus both suffered and tasted death for all of us.

Hebrews 2:9

What we do see is Jesus, who was given a position “a little lower than the angels”; and because he suffered death for us, he is now “crowned with glory and honor.” Yes, by God’s grace, Jesus tasted death for everyone.

The curse of death that should have fallen on billions of wayward souls, swallowing them up eternally, instead fell on the Savior who said, “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25).

The problem with just looking at this view is that everything is already accomplished.

There is nothing that affects our daily lives in the present.

When You Only Look To The Future Resurrection

When we remind ourselves of the historical fact that Jesus rose from the dead, it awakens in us the expectation that Jesus will return to raise the dead who are in him and that the defeat of death will be applied to all believers.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. 17 Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever.

I think all of us are eagerly awaiting that great and glorious day where all our hopes are fulfilled.

However if we limit ourselves to what Christ did, or what Christ is going to do, then we will miss all the excellent benefits of being children of the resurrection in the present age. (Luke 20:36)

Present Day Benefits of the Power Of The Resurrection of Christ

#1 Made Alive Together With Christ

Ephesians 2:4-5

But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, 5 that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)

The resurrection of Jesus gives each of us our spiritual life. If it were not for the resurrection then we would not have the ability to be born again.

We would still be in darkness and destined to a life separated from God.

When we received the resurrected Savior in our hearts, He began the resurrection process.

Just like Adam in his fallen state died spiritually and then began dying physically, so believers are resurrected first spiritually on their way to a complete physical resurrection at the coming of the Lord. God puts a “new spirit” within us (Ezek. 36:26)

#2 We Receive The “Breath Of Life.”

John 20:22

Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

When Jesus appeared to His disciples, he used great symbolism when He blew on His disciples to receive the Holy Spirit.

Just as the Lord God blew on Adam after creating him from the dust of the ground, giving him the breath of life, Jesus blew on His disciples giving them the presence of God into their souls through the Holy Spirit.

When Adam rebelled, they lost the breath of life, and slow death took over.

Jesus when blowing on us gives us the breath of life resulting in the impartation of the character and nature of God back into our lives.

He once again makes us living souls.

I am not saying He makes us “little gods.”

I am saying that He plants the seeds that produce His character and nature in us.

#3 We Are Justified And Made Righteous By The Resurrection

Romans 4:25

He was handed over to die because of our sins, and he was raised to life to make us right with God.

I like to help people remember what justifications means by this simple phrase.

“Just as if it never happened.”

We were made right with God because of the resurrection, and our sins are forgiven just as if they never happened.

God throws our sins as far as the east is from the west. (Psalm 103:12)

Because of what Jesus did, God has made us righteous in His sight, given us “the gift of righteousness” and even named us “the righteousness of God in Christ” (Rom. 5:17; 2 Cor. 5:21).

#4 The Resurrection Gives Us Hope For Today

1 Peter 1:3

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation,

At one time, we had “no hope, without God in this world” (Eph. 2:12).

Then “the God of hope” filled us “with all joy and peace in believing” (Rom. 15:13).

Hope is our desires being joined with expectation.

Death is the most hopeless thing there is. The thought of dying and having no eternal purpose or life is depressing.

It is because of the resurrection of Christ, and the eternal life He has placed in our hearts, that we have joy unspeakable and full of glory.

We have tremendous hope in everything.

If God can raise Jesus from the dead, then there is nothing He cannot do.

#5 The Resurrection Enables Complete Healing.

God has always been a healer. (Ex. 15:26)

However when Jesus was raised from the dead, complete healing became available.

Malachi 4:2

“But for you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture.

He was a healer before the resurrection before the full price was paid for us.

How much more did He come out of the grave with a passion and power to heal us completely—body, mind, soul, and spirit?

#6 The Resurrection Of Jesus Provides Victory

Let me finish this article with the passage I started with.

However, I will add the next verse as well.

Ephesians 2:4-6

But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, 5 that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) 6 For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.

To be seated with Jesus in the heavenly realms means that we are seated with Him in power, authority, rest, peace, and victory.

He has made our enemies our footstool.

All things are under His feet, and now all things are under our feet as well.

This is the restoration of everything that Adam and Eve lost in the beginning, and this speaks of complete victory over every negative we face in this world—not just historically and not just futuristically, but right here, right now.

Yes, that is the power of the resurrection of Jesus

“THIS IS THE VICTORY THAT OVERCOMES THE WORLD—OUR FAITH” (1 JOHN 5:4).
