In an instant, everything that had been built in the last 23 years no longer existed. I was now a widow. I cannot describe the emptiness, the vulnerability I felt, and the deep despair of losing a loved one.
What we had been, the home and name we had established together was gone. After the initial shock, my heart was flooded with questions.
Who am I? What do I do now? How am I going to live? Can I make it on my own? Where will I get support and strength? How am I going to live in this world without him?
Literally every part of me questioned every aspect of my existence.
As the minutes turned to hours and the hours to days I began to sense the intimate comfort and support of the Holy Spirit in these Bible verses about grief.
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn,
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,
I soon realized I was not walking this journey alone but of greater importance, God himself was carrying me.
4 Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows;
9 The LORD watches over the strangers; he relieves the fatherless and widow;
1 Because the Lord is my Shepherd, I have everything I need!
The demand I had made on him the day of my loss was being fulfilled in a very real way. God had become my husband! Not only that but he was exceedingly good at filling that role in my life.
5 For your Maker is your husband, the LORD of hosts is His name;
14 But You have seen, for You observe trouble and grief, to repay it by Your hand. The helpless commits himself to You;
18 He administers justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the stranger, giving him food and clothing
5 A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in His holy habitation.
25 The LORD will destroy the house of the proud, but He will establish the boundary of the widow.
5 But I would strengthen you with my mouth, And the comfort of my lips would relieve your grief.
This was the hardest season of life I have ever walked through. And I will forever cherish the intimacy and faithfulness of God as my husband during my journey through grief.
I would that no one would ever have to endure this process. But when you do I encourage you to let these Bible verses about grief dwell richly in your heart. I assure you that God understands, supports, carries, comforts and blesses each and every step of your journey.
