21 Tremendous Christian Quotes On Prayer

Having a Dialogue with God

Prayer is one of the essential ingredients in a successful Christian life. My saying about prayer is that “a Christian life without prayer is like a chocolate chip cookie without the chips. It is not a chocolate chip cookie.”

I have researched many of the great men and women of God over the years, and all of them had one thing in common. They were men and women of prayer.

I hope that these quotes on prayer will encourage you to increase and strengthen your prayer life.

21 Christian Quotes On Prayer

Don’t imagine that if you had a great deal of time you would spend more of it in prayer. Get rid of that idea! Again and again God gives more in a moment than in a long period of time, for God’s actions are not measured by time at all. – Teresa of Avila

When a Christian shuns fellowship with other Christians, the devil smiles. When he stops studying the Bible, the devil laughs. When he stops praying, the devil shouts for joy. – Corrie Ten Boom

The more praying there is in the world, the better the world will be, the mightier the forces against evil everywhere. Prayer, in one phase of its operation, is a disinfectant and a preventive. It purifies the air; it destroys the contagion of evil. Prayer is no fitful, short-lived thing. It is no voice crying unheard and unheeded in the silence. It is a voice which goes into God’s ear, and it lives as long as God’s ear is open to holy pleas, as long as God’s heart is alive to holy things. God shapes the world by prayer. Prayers are deathless. The lips that uttered them may be closed to death, the heart that felt them may have ceased to beat, but the prayers live before God, and God’s heart is set on them and prayers outlive the lives of those who uttered them; they outlive a generation, outlive an age, outlive a world. That man is the most immortal who has done the most and the best praying. They are God heroes, God’s saints, God’s servants, God’s vicegerents. A man can pray better because of the prayers of the past; a man can live holier because of the prayers of the past; the man of many and acceptable prayers has done the truest and greatest service to the incoming generation. The prayers of God’s saints strengthen the unborn generation against the desolating waves of sin and evil. – Edward McKendree (E. M.) Bounds

Men are God’s method. The church is looking for better methods; God is looking for better men. What the church needs today is not more machinery or better, not new organizations or more and novel methods, but men who the Holy Spirit can use – men of prayer, men mighty in prayer. The Holy Spirit does not come on machinery but on men. He does not anoint plans, but men – men of prayer. – Edward McKendree (E. M.) Bounds

Pray the largest prayers. You cannot think a prayer so large that God, in answering it, will not wish you had made it larger. Pray not for crutches but for wings! – Phillips Brooks

A great many people do not pray because they do not feel any sense of need. The sign that the Holy Spirit is in us is that we realize that we are empty, not that we are full. We have a sense of absolute need. We come across people who try us, circumstances that are difficult, conditions that are perplexing, and all these things awaken a dumb sense of need, which is a sign that the Holy Spirit is there. If we are ever free from the sense of need, it is not because the Holy Spirit has satisfied us, but because we have been satisfied with as much as we have. “A man’s reach should exceed his grasp. ” A sense of need is one of the greatest benedictions because it keeps our life rightly related to Jesus Christ. – Oswald Chambers

As a sound may dislodge an avalanche, so the prayer of faith sets in motion the power of God. – Mrs. Charles E. Cowman

The devil is not terribly frightened of our human efforts and credentials. But he knows his kingdom will be damaged when we begin to lift up our hearts to God. – Jim Cymbala

I realize that many Christians have not been praying because they have not accepted the reality of war in which we find ourselves. There is a spiritual war mode that we must appropriate. It is an aggressive stance that we take against evil. It is governed by love for people, but it is fearless and uncompromising with the powers of darkness that manipulate people to fulfill evil plans. – Francis Frangipane

As you read these words, I pray that this shall be the desire of your heart; and I know that the Father will hear your cry, and honor your prayer…and take your life, using it for His glory through the power and the presence of the Holy Spirit. – Kathryn Kuhlman

There are four ways God answers prayer: 1) No, not yet; 2) No, I love you too much; 3) Yes, I thought you’d never ask; 4) Yes, and here’s more. – Anne Lewis

Prayer is not eloquence, but earnestness; not the definition of helplessness, but the feeling of it; not figures of speech, but earnestness of soul. – Hannah More

Each time, before you intercede, be quiet first, and worship God in His glory. Think of what He can do, and how He delights to hear the prayers of His redeemed people. Think of your place and privilege in Christ, and expect great things! – Andrew Murray

Our prayers lay the track down on which God’s power can come. Like a mighty locomotive, his power is irresistible, but it cannot reach us without rails. – Watchman Nee

We need to be refueled often spiritually. That renewing fuel is found in Bible reading and prayer. Just like a fuel tank on the car, we need frequent filling. Lack of fuel causes spiritual weakness and stunted growth. Unlike the car, we don’t have to hunt for a gas station, and the price of fuel doesn’t change. This fuel is always available and free for the taking. There is no substitute. Our part is to keep our spiritual tank full. – Verna Pollock

A sinning man will stop praying. A praying man will stop sinning. – Leonard Ravenhill

Prayer is not a matter of getting what we want the most. Prayer is a matter of giving ourselves to God and learning His laws, so that He can do through us what He wants the most. – Agnes Sanford

[Jesus] is strong…but He’s also approachable. He is able to carry our load…but He’ll never make us feel embarrassed or defeated for asking. – Joni Eareckson Tada

Nobody ever got anything from God on the grounds that he deserved it. Haven fallen, man deserves only punishment and death. So if God answers prayer it’s because God is good. From His goodness, His lovingkindness, His good-natured benevolence, God does it! That’s the source of everything. – A. W. Tozer

You can also offer your prayers, obedience, and endurance of dryness to Our Lord, for the good of other souls, and then you have practiced intercession. Never mind if it all seems for the time very second-hand. The less you get out of it, the nearer it approaches to being something worth offering; and the humiliation of not being able to feel as devout as we want to be, is excellent for most of us. Use vocal prayer…very slowly, trying to realize the meaning with which it is charged and remember that…you are only a unit in the Chorus of the Church, so that the others will make good the shortcomings you cannot help. – Evelyn Underhill

Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin, and desire nothing but God, and I care not a straw whether they be clergymen or laymen; such alone will shake the gates of hell and set up the kingdom of heaven on earth… God does nothing but in answer to prayer. – John Wesley
