How to walk in the peace of God

What Is Peace With God?

There is a promise in the scripture called the peace of God. It is something that every believer in Jesus needs because it guards our hearts and minds. However there are many times when trials and tribulations assail us that it becomes easy to lose focus and lose that peace that surpasses all understanding.

Just this last week, I shared with my congregation a sermon on peace and some of the things I have learned about walking in God's peace.

We are facing uncertain times in our country both economically and spiritually. We are going to have to learn and understand how to walk in God's peace more than ever.

So here are a few things I have learned about walking in the peace of God.

God's Peace In The Bible

Letting The Peace Of God Rule Your Heart

The Apostle Paul told the Colossians that we needed to let the peace of God rule our hearts.

Colossians 3:15
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

In this peace of God scripture we see that it is possible to walk in God's peace all the time. That His peace can rule in our hearts instead of all our fears and worries and doubts. However it is something that takes a certain action on our part.

Think of it this way. When the Allies marched into Berlin during World War 2, peace came to the world because the Germans surrendered unconditionally.

In order to have the peace of God in our lives, we also must surrender unconditionally.

That means we give up the right to make the decision in our life, the direction that it will go, and the things that we think are important.

God's Promise To Keep Us In Perfect Peace.

In this Bible verse about peace of mind, we find a great promise.

Isaiah 26:3
3 You will keep him in perfect peace,
Whose mind is stayed on You,
Because he trusts in You.

The only way we can keep our minds on God is from a position of surrender. If we are not surrendered then there will be many distraction from this world that will take our focus off of Jesus and onto what is going on around us. We will look at our problems and not the solution to the problem.

The key to understanding and having the ability to surrender and have God's peace is trust. We have to trust that He knows best, that He is in control, and that His love for us is unfailing.

In my own life, I have suffered some severe disappointments. I had a marriage of 16 years fall apart, I waited for another lady who made me some pretty big promises for 9 years only to have her break those promises.

Through these things I have to trust that God knows what is best for me and that even in these disappointments His love for me is unfailing.

I do trust Him in these things because I have seen time and time again how He has known and understood what would be best for me. I have His perfect peace but it did not come overnight.

How To Have Peace That Surpasses All Understanding.

Philippians 4:6-7
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

There have been many a long night where I have had some pretty long and transparent talks with Jesus about different circumstances in my life. I have wrestled and asked why on more than one occasion.

In fact I have had a few Garden of Gethsemane experiences where it finally came down to saying "not my will but Thine be done".

There will be many times that you will need to get down on your knees and surrender just like our Lord did.

It make take a while for you to come to that point that you are once again at peace with God about a certain situation. However I have found that if you will do this that you will come to that point of peace.

This scripture shows that there is a process we go through when we pray. We first ask, then we plead, but we eventually get to a place of thanksgiving that God is eventually in control and that even what we see as the bad things, are for our good and that we have grown through the process.

This is what has happened to me.

I am much more able to speak to the hearts of those that have been broken by others by the experiences I have gone through. I both understand the pain and the human reactions that people deal with, and I know the path to healing.

I am able to be thankful for those things I went through because they changed me for the better.

It is because of this that the peace of God rules, guards and abides in my heart. His peace is truly perfect.

If He has done it for me, He will do it for you. It just starts with surrender and ends with abiding in the vine who is Jesus.
