Faith is a gift from God. However faith also grows over time. As we learn to place more of our trust and confidence in the character and nature of God, we see that our faith grows. Here are 6 faith building tips that will help you learn how to grow your faith.
The Apostle Paul stated that the message of the gospel produces faith.
14 But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?
When you listen to the message of the gospel it produces faith. Now many people have different interpretations of what the gospel is.
The basic definition of the word means good news. It is the good news that God is for you and not against you, that your sins are washed away through Christ, that you are now a new creation.
Instead of thinking that God is angry, mad, upset, and disappointed in you, you need to realize that He and you are in right relationship. When you start to do this, then you will start to learn how to build faith and trust in God.
It is not enough to just read the Bible to gain mere head knowledge. Jesus wants to illuminate the scriptures to us so that they become real to us.
On the road to Emmaus, Jesus encountered some disciples that were having a conversation about the scriptures. After they had explained all that had been happening, Jesus spoke these words.
25 Then Jesus said to them, “You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures. 26 Wasn’t it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory?” 27 Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
After this, Jesus acted as if He was traveling beyond Emmaus. These disciples asked Him to stay the night. They still did not realize that they were talking to Jesus. Jesus said that He would stay with them and they asked Him to bless their evening meal.
It was at this time that they realized that it was Jesus Himself. These were the words that they spoke.
32 They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?”
As you can see, there was an illumination process that was going on in their hearts as they were having the word of God explained to them by the Word of God Himself. (John 1:1)
It was this illumination that brought faith. "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (Romans 10:17)
As soon as they realized what had happened and had faith ignited in their hearts, they did not wait in Emmaus, but within the hour left Emmaus and went back to Jerusalem to tell Peter and the other disciples what had happened.
When you open your Bible, ask God to speak to you personally from the scriptures. This is another method you can learn how to increase your faith in God.
Not only is faith built when we read and have the written word of God illuminated in our hearts, but it is also built when we hear the still small voice of God speak to our hearts in prayer. (Isaiah 65:24, Jeremiah 33:3)
When you hear that still small voice, faith builds. Look at this example of how this happens in Paul's letter to the Corinthians
8 Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. 9 Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.
During Paul's prayer time, He not only asked for something but He also listened. In fact, in this instance, the answer was no but came with an explanation.
It was that explanation that He got from the still small voice of the Lord that produced faith in Paul to walk in his weaknesses instead of trying to get rid of them.
Just like the Apostle Paul, when you start to listen to the voice of God in your spirit, you begin to understand how to trust God with your life.
The Bible says that the church overcomes by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony. (Revelation 12:11)
When you hear a testimony about how God has been faithful, changed a life, healed, or provided for someone, it builds faith.
When we hear how God did something for one person, then we start to believe that God will do it for us as well. It sparks in us a desire to know how to have more faith.
We do not base our faith on supernatural experiences but faith is built when we experience supernatural experiences. Whether it be a dream, vision, prophecy, healing, or miracle, they all cause our faith to increase.
When Saul, who was to become the Apostle Paul, was knocked off his donkey and on to His backside, all of a sudden, Paul went from anti-faith to extreme faith.
1 Meanwhile, Saul was uttering threats with every breath and was eager to kill the Lord’s followers. 1 So he went to the high priest. 2 He requested letters addressed to the synagogues in Damascus, asking for their cooperation in the arrest of any followers of the Way he found there. He wanted to bring them - both men and women - back to Jerusalem in chains. 3 As he was approaching Damascus on this mission, a light from heaven suddenly shone down around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me?” 5 “Who are you, lord?” Saul asked.
And the voice replied, “I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting! 6 Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”
When God breaks supernaturally into the natural realm, you can have no other response than that of faith. Signs and wonders are designed this way. They are designed to confirm what is already written in the word of God. (Mark 16:20)
There may be times when God does something similar to you. You might not hear voices or see bright lights, but God does something miraculous in your life. Remember to start exercising your faith as the Apostle Paul did by obeying the voice of the Lord.
Whether it is Saul's conversion experience that we just read about, or it is the voice that Ananias heard just a few verses later in verse 10, the voice of the Lord brings faith.
Think about the life changing event when Jesus took Peter, James, and John up the mount of transfiguration. (Mark 9) There they heard the audible voice of God.
Now I am not one that feels this should be an everyday experience. I think we should hear the still small voice of God in our heart daily, but not the audible voice.
I also do not discount that it happened and does happen. What I do know is that when it happens it produces faith.
I trust God that He can decide how to grow your faith by using this method if ever.
So there you have it. 6 steps to building faith. I hope that as you learn how to develop your faith, you will see your faith increase to such a point that you are a contender for the hall of faith. (Hebrews 11)
